Before I drove, I took the "7" (shlepping from Rockaway through Manhattan) from Grand Central to get to my grandmother in Whitestone (Q16 from Main Street), or to get to Shea Stadium. I always enjoyed the views on that line, including the Adams chewing gum plant and the Swingline stapler factory.
